Administrative Fellowship Program

The MMC Administrative Fellowship is a one-year, postgraduate program offered every year. The program targets master’s candidates and recent master’s level graduates in health care administration, business administration, and public health. The Fellow reports to the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, who is also the primary preceptor.

The goal of the Fellowship is to prepare the next generation of healthcare leaders to be a contributing member of the administrative team. Fellows gain first-hand experience through participating in strategic projects, direct observation of senior leaders, and executive mentoring.

Fellowship Components

Informational Interviews
During the first month of the program, the Fellow meets individually with members of the senior leadership team to learn about their roles and responsibilities to identify potential projects.

Standing Meetings
The Administrative Fellow becomes a member of the senior leadership team for the duration of the program and attends weekly executive meetings including: President’s Council, Operations Council, Service Line Executive Council, and Full Management.

Board Exposure
The Fellow is invited to monthly MMC Board meetings and rotates through Board committee meetings.

Individual Meetings with Senior Leadership
The Executive Vice President and COO meets bi-weekly with the Fellow to discuss fellowship projects, relevant hospital news and events, and advise on post-fellowship careers.

Executive Mentorship
The Fellow is paired with a senior leader of their choosing to serve as an executive mentor. Mentors monitor the Fellow’s projects, recommend professional development opportunities, provide quarterly reviews, and are actively involved in the post-fellowship career search.

Clinical Shadowing
Fellows may identify hospital areas in which they would like to gain first-hand experience through clinical shadowing.

The Administrative Fellow is encouraged to present work throughout the year, culminating in a year-end presentation to the President & CEO and senior leadership.

Health System Strategy
Fellows are invited to attend meetings at MaineHealth and observe system-level initiatives and projects.

Fellows will complete 8 to 12 major projects focused on a variety of topics including: finance, process improvement, public health, clinical operations, strategic planning, and project management.


To be considered for the MMC administrative fellowship, candidates must submit:

• Cover letter
• Current resume
• Personal statement of interest outlining career objectives
• Two letters of recommendation
• Official graduate school transcript
