Anesthesiology Residency Program

Often described as the 'hidden gem' of residency programs, MMC's Anesthesiology Residency offers what few others can; excellent training with a collegial staff in a world class hospital all set against the backdrop of one of the most beautiful places in the country to live (the beautiful New England coastline).

Our program is made up of a highly interactive group of attendings and residents who work hard and are exceptional at what they do. Each year, five new residents are accepted into the program that supports a total of twenty from intern to CA-3 year. This small number makes a tremendous impact on the volume of cases each resident takes the lead on, allowing them to hone their skills and build confidence early in their training.

Maine Medical Center provides one of the best clinical caseloads available. Over fifty staff anesthesiologists oversee the delivery nearly 36,000 anesthetics annually, providing a wealth of training experience. Maine Medical Center is a referral base for over one million people and is a regional leader for open-heart surgery, kidney transplantation, pediatric surgery, obstetrics, and neurosurgery. Because we do not train fellows, our residents have no need to compete for the most challenging and appropriate cases. MMC is a Level I Trauma Center and has a Level 3 NICU; these centers allow our residents experiences they may not have in a smaller hospital. Nurse anesthetists help manage the general OR case load such that residents' time in anesthesia sub-specialty areas is protected without the need to cover to other areas of the OR. They also benefit from attendings who were trained at the most renowned hospitals in the country, access to a new, state of the art simulation center and employment at a medical center that makes resident satisfaction a priority.

In addition to the facilities at Maine Medical Center, CA-2 and CA-3 residents have the opportunity to rotate at Scarborough Surgery Center which is located six miles from the Maine Medical Center campus. Residents participate in surgeries in an ambulatory setting and are able to observe PACU structure and processes that promote high volume and quick turnovers.  Senior residents spend time at Southern Maine Health Center, a smaller regional hospital in Biddeford, Maine. Residents will gain experience managing an anesthetic care team in a supervised setting.

And when the work is done, our residents enjoy all that Maine has to offer. The activities in this beautiful four-season ‘Vacationland,’ famous for its lighthouses, outdoor escapes, glorious weather, genuine people and fabulous food, are endless

So we invite you to spend some time on the site meeting our residents and staff, reviewing our curriculum, and exploring life in Portland to see why we consider ourselves lucky to be a part of this outstanding program and why you might also find it a perfect fit.
