Are You a Candidate?

The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (AMBS) has created a powerful video that explains the benefits of our work, through the stories of others. We encourage you to take a look today!

Weight loss surgery can benefit appropriately selected patients in many ways. In addition to weight loss, most patients experience improvement in medical conditions, a decrease in medications and better quality of life.

To qualify for weight loss surgery, you must meet certain criteria set by the National Institutes of Health, as well as your individual health insurance company.

Appropriate Weight

The main criteria used for determining eligibility for weight loss surgery is called Body Mass Index or BMI. You can calculate your BMI by using a BMI table.

In order to qualify for weight loss surgery, you must have a BMI of 40 or higher. If you have a BMI of 35 AND medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes or sleep apnea you may also be eligible for weight loss surgery. Individuals with a BMI of less than 35 do not qualify for either type of weight loss surgery at Maine Medical Center.
