Barbara Bush is admired and respected by young and old alike. Her warmth, relaxed manner, and keen wit quickly win over people of all ages.
The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center was named in honor of her long-standing commitment to children's issues in the state of Maine. At the public naming in 1995, Mrs. Bush graciously accepted the honor, and reminded those in attendance that "children are our future" and providing "a great start to life for all children" is the most basic of needs and priorities.
Raised in Rye, New York, she met her future husband, George Bush, at a Christmas vacation dance, at age 16. The two married in 1945, when the future president returned home on leave from the Navy.
Mrs. Bush became the mother of six children, and was described as the linchpin of the family.
In addition to a home in Texas, the Bush family enjoys a vacation home in Kennebunkport, Maine. Each spring, when President and Mrs. Bush return to Maine, a visit to The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center is always on her itinerary.
Her visits are enjoyed by patients and staff alike, and the medical center is grateful for her support and dedication. Please visit our donation page if you are interested in supporting The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center.
