Quality & Outcomes

The Maine Medical Center Cardiovascular Institute pairs a highly skilled team with innovative technology to deliver cardiac care that is centered around our patients. Our program is the largest in Northern New England, which gives us a level of expertise that is unmatched in the region.

We monitor the medical necessity of everything we do. When we compare this data with a national standard called “appropriate use,” we rank high among our peers. For our patients, it means that we are not simply doing more; we are doing more that matters to them.

In our drive for continuous improvement, we also monitor our results and patient satisfaction levels, and we compare these to national benchmarks. Below are a few examples of these results for cardiothoracic surgery and coronary interventions.

Our fellowship-trained cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons provide diagnostics and treatment for more people than any other hospital in Maine.  Higher patient volumes are shown to be linked with better patient outcomes.

  • CABG: Coronary Artery Bypass Graft
  • AVR: Atrial Valve Repair
  • MVR: Mitral Valve Repair
  • TAVR: Trans-catheter Aortic Valve Replacement

The high volume of procedures gives us a depth of experience that we tailor to each individual patient. The result is patient outcomes that compare favorably to national benchmarks.
