Cardiovascular Care at Maine Medical Center

Comprehensive Care for Better Heart and Vascular Health

Wherever your cardiovascular care journey takes you—routine diagnostics, emergency treatment, specialized surgery, or cardiac rehabilitation—you can be sure you are receiving the highest level of care at Maine Medical Center (MMC). Our cardiovascular specialists treat a broad range of heart, congenital, and vascular conditions—using advanced technology, equipment and procedures to treat even the most complex diseases and conditions. And through MaineHealth, MMC patients have seamless access to a regional network of specialists and locations. Often, recovery and rehabilitation care can happen close to home.

Your Heart, in Good Hands

The cardiovascular team at MMC not only cares for more heart patients than any other hospital in Maine, but also more than most hospitals across New England. As a result, our patients do exceptionally well.* In our drive for continuous improvement, we also monitor our results and patient satisfaction levels, and we compare these to national benchmarks. For additional information, view our latest Outcomes and Innovation ReportMMC has maintained a tradition of cardiovascular excellence for over 50 years. This approach had led to many firsts in Maine, including:

  • First open heart surgery (1959)
  • First pacemaker implanted (1963)
  • First coronary artery bypass surgery (1972)
  • First balloon angioplasty (1982)
  • First LVAD (left ventricular assist device) implanted (1997)
  • First robotic mitral valve replacement (2004)
  • First transcatheter mitral valve repair (2009)
  • First transcatheter aortic valve replacement (2012)
  • First convergent procedure (2013)

Today, MMC continues to bring the most advanced cardiovascular expertise and procedures to Maine. In 2017, we were designated as a “Gold Level Center of Excellence” by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO). And, MMC is still the only hospital in Maine to perform LVAD surgeries. MMC was re-certified by The Gold Seal of Approval from Joint Commission as an Advanced Certification Program for Ventricular Assist Device in 2018.
