Maine Medical Center, a 606-bed non-profit hospital, is the largest medical center and teaching hospital in northern New England. When it opened as Maine General Hospital in 1874, Maine Medical Center was the first general hospital in the state, and has remained a focal point for the development of healthcare in Maine. Today the institution continues to serve as a community hospital for the Greater Portland area, as the largest source of tertiary care in northern New England, as a center for health research and education for healthcare professionals.
