Emergency Medicine Residency

Recreation

Recreation is part of our mission to promote personal as well as professional growth. To this end, we expect that part of the educational experience for residents will be to learn to balance recreation and professional demands.

Maine Medical Center has several hospital-wide social events, such as a "shrimp party" in June, a welcome picnic on the beach in September, and several night outings in Portland through out the year. The Emergency Department formally hosts a yearly summer welcome picnic, an annual weekend-long retreat in the fall, and a winter party. The retreat weekend provides an excellent opportunity for residents to socialize with each other and their families, as well as to hike, sail, and enjoy Maine's natural beauty. Informally, there are always other residents available for impromptu potluck dinners or cook-outs, to explore the finer dining in Portland, or to partner up for a jog, bike, ski, kayak, SUP, surf, or climb.
