The Emergency Department (ED) at Maine Medical Center is Maine's only American College of Surgeons Level 1 verified trauma center as well as home to Maine's only Pediatric Emergency Department. We are a state-of-the-art facility designed to meet the needs of a high-volume patient population from Maine and New Hampshire, as well as visitors from all over the world.
Our ED uses the most advanced technology and treatments available in emergency medicine today. We are the gateway to the most advanced trauma system in Maine 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to patients of all ages.
Staffed by Board-certified emergency medicine physicians we have full access to trained specialists, such as cardiologists, neurosurgeons, orthopedists and neonatologists. Emergency nurses are highly-trained in all areas of emergency care and maintain specialty certifications in the administration of advanced adult and pediatric life support as well as adult and pediatric trauma care. Our dedicated radiology suite within the ED allows for lab results to be returned in 10 to 20 minutes and routine laboratory evaluation turnaround time of less than one hour.
The Acute Psychiatry Unit (APU), is specially designed to safely manage patients experiencing a wide range of psychiatric emergencies. It is staffed by a dedicated team of mental health professionals including nurses, licensed clinical social workers, advanced practitioners, psychiatric resident physicians, and attending psychiatrists. They provide evaluation, crisis intervention, emergency behavioral stabilization, medication treatment, and disposition planning. The APU operates 24/7 and serves over 600 patients annually.
The ED at Maine Medical Center also supports the Northern New England Poison Center (NNEPC). The Poison Center staffs a 24-hour toll-free hotline (800) 222-1222.
