Cardiac Surgery Program
50-Year Anniversary

May 2009 marks the 50-year anniversary of the open heart surgery program at Maine Medical Center . MMC was one of the first hospitals in the nation to perform open heart surgery when its program began in 1959. To date, the cardiac surgery program has performed more than 35,000 open heart surgery procedures.

History of Firsts in Cardiac Care

The cardiac surgery program at MMC has an ongoing history of “firsts” in cardiac care, including:

  • First open heart surgery (1959) 
  • First pacemaker implanted (1963)
  • First coronary artery bypass surgery (1972) 
  • First Balloon Angioplasty (1982)
  • First LVAD (left ventricular assist device) implanted (1997) 
  • First robotic mitral valve replacement (2004)
  • First Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair (2009)
