Daniel Cox, D.O.

  • Year Completed Residency: 2011
  • Hometown: Coeur d'Alene, Idaho
  • Undergraduate School: The George Washington University
  • Medical School: Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine
  • Fellowship: Pediatric Cardiology, Children's Hospital of Wisconsin/Medical College of Wisconsin
  • Current Location: Salt Lake City, Utah
  • Current Position: Pediatric and Adult Congenital Cardiologist, University of Utah Health Care
  • Favorite Things about MMC's Med-Peds Program: Medicine and pediatrics all in one hospital - you don't have to go between two separate hospitals. This allows you to see your counterparts while you are on medicine and they are on pediatrics and vice versa. Every attending knew me and I knew them and I knew almost every resident in the hospital. You work with all of them closely. There are no pediatric fellows - I really wanted this in my training and have benefited greatly from this. I had done more procedures in my training at MMC than most of the PICU fellows at my current hospital have done during their first two years of training.

Also, everyone is willing to consider change - if you bring an idea, it will be seriously considered! Some examples: attendings are open to trying new ways to round. Our annual med-peds retreats continue to change based on input from residents.

Sarah Mulligan, M.D.

  • Year Completed Residency: 2014
  • Hometown: Hyannis, Massachusetts
  • Undergraduate School: University of Massachusetts Amherst
  • Medical School: University of Vermont College of Medicine
  • Current Location: Norway, Maine
  • Current Position: Med-Peds Primary Care, Oxford Hills Internal Medicine and Western Maine Pediatrics
  • Favorite Things about MMC's Med-Peds Program: The Med-Peds program at MMC was the best choice I could have made when deciding on where to go for residency. In addition to getting the best of both worlds in two very strong categorical programs, I've learned valuable lessons about medicine and about life. I've made great friends who I know will last a lifetime and I can't imagine being in any other place but Maine with my family. I hope to continue to play a small part in the program now as an attending and help new interns and residents achieve the same.

Jack Rusley, M.D.

  • Year Completed Residency: 2014
  • Hometown: Englewood, Colorado
  • Undergraduate School: Brown University
  • Medical School: Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University
  • Current Location: Baltimore, Maryland
  • Current Fellowship: Adolescent Medicine, Johns Hopkins University
  • Favorite Things about MMC's Med-Peds Program: The Med-Peds program at MMC is distinctive from other programs in other hospitals and even other programs within MMC. We have a strong Med-Peds identity and cohesiveness, which is due to the strong leadership and fierce advocacy of our administrative staff and program directors. We are both integrated into and help push the categorical programs to improve patient care and resident well-being thanks to our unique perspective. We learn to practice in a diverse urban area at a tertiary care center as well as a rural community practice, sometimes on the same day! Most of all, I feel fortunate to have trained with such excellent colleagues and learned from excellent teaching attendings.

Kathryn Brouillette, M.D.

  • Year Completed Residency: 2015
  • Hometown: Falmouth, Maine
  • Undergraduate School: McGill University
  • Medical School: McGill University Faculty of Medicine
  • Current Location: Portland, Maine
  • Current Position: Internal Medicine Hospitalist
  • Favorite Things about MMC’s Med-Peds Program: I chose Maine Med because I felt like it was a wonderful secret.  It is a strong academic program in a community setting.  We are small enough to feel a camaraderie much like family (among all members on the team) but big enough to get the diverse exposure and case load necessary in residency.  The institution is dedicated to quality improvement and it shows in how much people enjoy working here. Portland offers the best quality of life on the East coast, I think, and it's also my childhood home.  I liked it so much, I'm here to stay as an adult hospitalist.

David Buzanoski, M.D.

  • Year Completed Residency: 2015 (Pediatric Chief Year 2015-2016)
  • Hometown: Newport, Maine
  • Undergraduate School: Tufts University
  • Medical School: Michigan State University College of Human Medicine
  • Current Location: Salt Lake City, Utah
  • Current Position: Internal Medicine-Pediatric Hospitalist, Jordan Valley Medical Center
  • Favorite Things about MMC’s Med-Peds Program: In one word: Balance. Med-peds residency packs a lot of requirements into a short amount of time, and it’s really challenging to train well-rounded physicians while also supporting residents’ individual interests and protecting their work-life balance. Somehow, though, our leadership makes it happen. They work tirelessly to coordinate a diverse and complex curriculum and then bend over backwards to rearrange it in order to maintain flexibility for the residents. I can’t count the number of times my requests were met with “let’s figure out how to make this work” rather than “I don’t think we can do that”.  Through it all, the faculty and administration also really encouraged me to have a life outside the residency. They genuinely cared about my well-being and they worked hard to help me maintain a realistic balance between my work-life and personal-life.

Adam Putschoegl, D.O.

  • Year Completed Residency: 2015
  • Hometown: Oakdale, Minnesota
  • Undergraduate School: Saint John’s University, Collegeville, MN
  • Medical School: A.T. Still University Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine
  • Current Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota
  • Current Fellowship: Pediatric Cardiology, Mayo Clinic
  • Favorite Things about MMC’s Med-Peds Program: I instinctively think of the word family as I reflect on my time in the med/peds program.  I was able to count on my fellow residents, attendings and administrative staff whenever I needed them.  I also knew they were doing everything possible to make sure I was getting the best education.  It was also great to be a part of a somewhat smaller program where I knew all of the attendings and residents and they all knew me.  This allowed me some flexibility to get the procedures I wanted and to work with the specialists in pediatric cardiology as this was my primary interest.  I also could not have asked for a better place to live.  I always tell people Maine is a hidden gem.  The food is incredible, the outdoor activities are endless and it's all so accessible.  It was an all-around great experience and despite being thankful to be done with that phase of my career, I would not have wanted to do it any place else!
