Awards and Recognitions
Maine Medical Center is ranked the top hospital in Maine by U.S. News & World Report, and five specialties are named to the publication’s “high-performing” category, including Orthopedics.
US News and World Report considers the top ranking hospitals as the kind of medical centers that should be on patient’s lists when they need the best care. These are the places that other hospitals send the toughest cases. The hospital rankings are an aid to help steer patients to hospitals with strong skills in the procedures and medical conditions that present the biggest challenges.
The Joint Replacement Center at Maine Medical Center has earned two Gold Seals of ApprovalTM for health care quality. The Joint Commission awarded a Disease-Specific Care Certification for both Hip Replacement Surgery and Knee Replacement Surgery.
To earn this distinction, a disease management program undergoes an extensive, unannounced, on-site evaluation by a team of Joint Commission reviewers every two years. The program is evaluated against Joint Commission standards through an assessment of a program's processes, the program's ability to evaluate and improve care within its own organization, and interviews with patients and staff.
The Joint Commission provides certification of more than 1,000 disease-specific care programs, primary stroke centers, and health care staffing services. An independent, not-for-profit organization, The Joint Commission is the nation's oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care.

The Joint Replacement Center has been named an Aetna Institute of Quality® Orthopedic Care Facility for total joint replacement and spine surgery. Facilities are selected for consistently delivering evidence-based, safe care.
