Family Medicine Residency

Sand Beach at Acadia National Park

Sports Medicine Fellowship

Our exceptional sports medicine department has four talented providers who bring a variety of experiences to resident education. 2013-14 ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) President Dr. Bill Dexter is known as “The Big Guy” and brings decades of experience in treating athletes and non-athletes for orthopedic concerns.  Dr. Ally Howe is an excellent teacher and has been part of the medical staff for the US Women’s Hockey Team and other high-profile athletes at the Sochi Olympics as well as previous Olympic Games. Our sports medicine clinic also houses two physical therapists and an athletic trainer, who further residents' skills and knowledge.

During the first year of residency, residents spend one month seeing patients in our busy sports medicine clinic and in the urgent care setting managing a variety of musculoskeletal injuries, with the option to participate in sideline coverage at local athletic events such as the Maine Marathon. There are plenty of opportunities to learn procedures such as knee and shoulder injections, splinting, etc.

During the third year of residency, residents spend another month seeing patients in sports medicine clinic and in the urgent care setting. There are more opportunities to hone procedural skills and learn new, more advanced procedures based on the resident’s level of interest.

We also offer a sports medicine fellowship after residency. For more information about the fellowship, please see the sports medicine department webpage here.
