Residency - General Information

Graduate Medical Education

Members of the house staff are recruited through the National Resident Matching Program from a highly competitive pool of applicants from schools throughout the United States. Each residency program is the responsibility of a full-time program director, and more than 500 highly qualified attending physicians serve as faculty.

House officers benefit from the very close personal and professional relationships that develop with members of the attending staff, a collegiality that is characteristic of the hospital and community. Clinical practice is supported by an excellent nursing and allied health professional staff, and a highly skilled ancillary staff.

Physicians on our attending staff have developed with us opportunities for residents to practice in office settings. Residents work with physicians in individual offices, staff a clinic in Cape Elizabeth, and work at our new Falmouth primary care facility. The idea is to give them the experience of working in an actual medical practice.

The clinical experience is complemented by basic science seminars, daily teaching rounds, and a large number of clinical conferences in all specialties and subspecialties. Visiting faculty from the University of Vermont as well as from other major hospitals and medical schools throughout the country are frequent speakers at conferences at the medical center.

House officers regularly participate in major continuing education offerings sponsored outside the hospital. Furthermore, the hospital supports attendance of each house officer beyond the first year of training at a major medical education conference sponsored by another institution in another city.
