Maine Medical Center, a 606-bed non-profit hospital, is the largest medical center and teaching hospital in northern New England. When it opened as Maine General Hospital in 1874, Maine Medical Center was the first general hospital in the state, and has remained a focal point for the development of healthcare in Maine. Today the institution continues to serve as a community hospital for the Greater Portland area, as the largest source of tertiary care in northern New England, as a center for health research and education for healthcare professionals.
The institution has a long and rich history of medical education. As a single-hospital sponsor, MMC supports over 200 residents and fellows in 11 residencies and 8 fellowships approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.Maine Medical Center is the principal affiliate of the University of Vermont College of Medicine, providing clinical teaching for their medical students. Our residency and fellowship program in Geriatrics offers residents the opportunity to learn about every aspect of geriatric care including, but not limited to, patient care, teaching and administration
