Medical Student Electives/Rotations
We offer Complementary and Integrative Medicine for medical students. For information and updates contact Veronica at 207-662-7402 or eMail her at LabbeV@mmc.org.
To make sound clinical judgments about the safe and effective integration of Conventional and Alternative Medicine, medical students need more training. Education in an integrative approach will allow them to provide optimum health care and to build connections and stronger therapeutic relationships with their patients as well as healthcare providers with different historical and philosophical backgrounds. This experience will help individuals reflect and gain perspective on their lives and on what it means to be a physician-healer in a supportive community of students, physicians and CAM providers. Our goal is that upon completion of their training they will provide informed, compassionate medical care and assistance in guiding patients to the safest and most appropriate treatments and providers.
Equally important, these physicians in training will rediscover that caring for patients is best accomplished when practitioners also care for themselves. Perhaps the greatest impact this program will achieve is to bring together a group of potential future leaders and change agents from around the nation, build upon and enhance their passion for Integrative Medicine and help them develop the confidence and leadership skills needed to immediately influence their classmates and faculty at their home medical institutions.

Family Medicine Outpatient Rotation w/Integrative Medicine Focus
This month-long rotation consists of ambulatory patient care at the Family Medicine Centers (Portland and Falmouth) and learning experiences in complementary and integrative medicine. The integrative medicine portion of the rotation takes place both in the Family Practice Centers and in the offices of complementary and integrative medicine practitioners in the community. This aspect includes opportunities to observe patient care and provider/patient interactions and has the potential for complementary therapy treatments. Learning experiences may include integrative medicine consults, mind/body medicine, homeopathy, manual therapies, acupuncture and nutritional and botanical medicine.
Students are given readings and an introduction to evidence-based online resources in complementary and integrative medicine. The rotation includes time for reflection and personal wellness activities. Each student will present a brief talk on an integrative medicine topic of his or her choice to residents and preceptors during an ambulatory teaching session.
