Internal Medicine Residency

Maine Medical Center (MMC) is a 606- bed, non-profit hospital and the largest medical center in northern New England. When it opened as Maine General Hospital in 1874, MMC was the first general hospital in the state and has remained a focal point for healthcare development in Maine. Today the institution continues to serve as both the largest source of tertiary care and largest teaching hospital in northern New England.

The institution has a long history of graduate medical education. As a single-hospital sponsor, MMC supports over 200 residents and fellows in 11 residencies and 8 fellowships - all ACGME accredited.  MMC has been training internal medicine residents for nearly 100 years.  Our residency program currently supports 45 internal medicine residents.  Fellowships under the Department of Medicine include cardiology, nephrology, pulmonary and critical care, infectious disease, and geriatrics.

Maine Medical Center is further committed to educating tomorrow's caregivers through the Tufts University School of Medicine - Maine Medical Center Program undergraduate medical school program. This innovative medical school program has a focus on primary care and rural medicine. The Tufts-MMC Program medical students blend pre-clinical experiences in Portland and Boston with clinical experiences throughout the State of Maine, including Maine Medical Center, several community hospitals and many rural primary care practices.

MMC has a large referral base, serving more than 1.4 million people. This provides for busy resident services and an excellent diversity in both patients and pathology. Medicine, with its average daily census of over 200 patients, is the largest teaching department in the hospital.

Patient care at MMC ranges from primary care to the full spectrum of tertiary care, ensuring a broad-based patient population for residency training. Tertiary care is provided through programs such as invasive cardiology, advanced critical care, HIV consultation, renal transplantation, peripheral stem cell transplantation, adult and pediatric cardiovascular surgery, and trauma care.

Maine Medical Center's academic affiliations with the VA Maine Healthcare System and the Maine Rural Practice Network offer our residents valuable experiences in caring for Maine's veterans and practicing rural medicine.

MMC's goal of making Maine "the healthiest state in the nation" includes several ongoing initiatives to improve the delivery of health care in Maine.  A new state-of-the-art simulation center at MMC's Brighton Campus provides an outstanding  learning environment for students and residents.  The MaineHealth system, which includes Maine Medical Center, is in the process of implementing a fully integrated electronic health record that will be shared between its hospitals and ambulatory practices throughout the state.  The patient-centered medical home model of primary care is being adopted in our ambulatory teaching practices.

We welcome you to the Department of Medicine at Maine Medical Center.
