Penobscot Bay Medical Center is a 109-bed hospital located on Penobscot Bay in Rockport, northeast of Portland on coastal Route 1. Both internists and family practitioners provide primary care. The center is also a regional secondary care referral center, with most of the medical and surgical subspecialties. There is a long-standing referral pattern for tertiary care with Maine Medical Center. The hospital has a medical staff of over 85 physicians and more than 95% are board-certified in their practice specialty.
The facility includes a birthing center, cancer care center, day surgery unit, 24-hour emergency department, medical/surgical inpatient unit, special care unit, and four operating rooms. The hospital is a part of Pen Bay Health Care, which also includes Kno-Wal-Lin Home Care and Hospice, the Knox Center for Long-Term Care, and Mid-Coast Mental Health.
