OB/GYN Residency
The OB/GYN residency program at Maine Medical Center is an ACGME-accredited program whose vision is to train competent physicians/surgeons who are compassionate patient care providers, life long learners and teachers, and healthy contributing members of their communities. Mission of the OB/GYN Residency program at Maine Medical Center:
Clinical experience is provided in the broad range of obstetrics and gynecology as defined by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The educational program is supervised by the Program Director and the Resident Education Committee, on which two residents sit. Full time faculty provide teaching and supervision in all clinical arenas. Residents enjoy a close working relationship with experienced obstetrician/surgeons in private practice. The program trains 16 residents each year. In addition to receiving a broad and intense clinical experience, residents are supported in completing a research project during their residency, as well as a quality improvement project. Accreditation In 2010, the OB/GYN residency program earned a coveted five year accreditation cycle and was awarded two commendations from the Residency Review Committee for OB/GYN. Teaching Resources The program is primarily located at Maine Medical Center. The patient-teaching population includes both non-referred patients entering through the clinics or emergency department as well as the private patients admitted by the attending staff. The volume and variety of the operative and obstetrical patients admitted to Maine Medical Center annually provide a strong teaching base. The residents attain outpatient experience in the Resident Continuity Clinic, where they follow obstetric patients and their own surgical patients - operating on more than 90% of continuity patients they book for surgery. A high-risk outpatient clinic is held weekly under the supervision of a maternal-fetal medicine specialist. A pregnancy termination clinic is held twice a month under the supervision of an attending physician. Colposcopy clinic is held in the ambulatory clinic weekly. The reproductive endocrine rotation allows residents to learn working directly with the Director of Reproductive Sciences, as well as locally with reproductive endocrinologists at Boston IVF - Portland.
