Maine Medical Center is accredited by the Maine Medical Association to provide continuing medical education (CME) for physicians. MMC was last awarded Full Accreditation as an intrastate CME sponsor for 4 years on October 25, 2012.
CME Mission Statement
The majority of programs approved for AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM are regularly-scheduled conferences (RSS) offered by MMC clinical departments or centers. Each year, MMC offers a large number and great variety of regularly scheduled conference series. A number of special programs - such as annual conferences, courses, or symposia - are also offered each year. These CME activities may be designed:
- to transmit new, "state-of-the-art" information;
- to diffuse new technologies and advances;
- to discuss practice guidelines;
- to refresh and reinforce previous medical knowledge and skills;
- to provide a forum to exchange ethical, legal, and social ideas; or
- to discuss and evaluate research activities at the local as well as national level.
Outreach education to other institutions and agencies is also vital to the fulfillment of MMC's mission. Physicians as adult learners will require multiple types of formats (e.g., practice-based, small groups, lectures, etc.). CME planners are guided by evidence-based literature as to effective formats. Multiple approaches are preferred over single methods, and both an increase in physician learning and positive changes in physician behavior are expected. Assessment of improvement in patients' health care will be encouraged.
MMC uses a combination of centralized and de-centralized approaches to regularly-scheduled conferences: RSS activities are planned, administered, evaluated, and monitored on a department/center level, while designating educational activities for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ is centralized in the Department of Medical Education. A web-based CME tracking system allows department staff to record attendance for all RSSs, such as Grand Rounds or Journal Club. The database also provides annual transcripts for physicians to simplify their documentation of CME activities completed for licensure.
