Applying to the Program
MMC participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) using ERAS.
We require 1) a medical school transcript, 2) NBME scores, 3) dean's letter, and 4) three letters of recommendation. Additionally, we require all applicants to complete USMLE Step 1. The only common data point in the application process for allopathic, osteopathic, and foreign medical students is the USMLE Step 1, thus the reason for requiring all applicants to take the Step 1 examination. For those who have studied outside of the United States, the anesthesiology residency at MMC requires one year of clinical experience in the United States. We sponsor J-1 visas which are handled through our Department of Medical Education.
If an interview is granted, you will receive an email with instructions and next steps on how to schedule an interview.
Interviews are scheduled from the middle of October through the middle of January.
Candidates are expected to participate in pre-interview day dinners with current residents at one of Portland’s many fine restaurants. The interview day typically begins at 8:30 AM. Candidates will meet with the Program Director, current residents, and several key faculty members. An informal lunch with the residents will be held during the day. Candidates will also have the opportunity to tour our facility. The interview day ends between 3:30PM - 4:30PM.
What We Are Looking For In a Candidate
We are looking for bright, academically driven individuals who have shown success in the classroom and in their medical school rotations. But along with scholastic prowess, we seek individuals who demonstrate attributes of leadership, teamwork, excellent interpersonal skills, and appreciation for every member of the health care team. We pride ourselves in recruiting outstanding residents who are able to play an integral role in the patient care model both in the OR and out.
