Telehealth is the delivery of health services via telecommunication technology, including the telephone and video conferencing. Examples include teleconferencing between providers, evaluating and treating patients at another location, and monitoring patients' health remotely.
MaineHealth is dedicated to the growth of telehealth to improve the health status of our communities by integrating, advancing and optimizing the use of telehealth technologies. Telehealth offers access to specialized care, less travel for patients in rural areas, greater convenience for patients and closer patient monitoring, all of which can contribute to improved patient outcomes.
Telehealth at MaineHealth includes Telestroke, speech pathology, psychiatry, pediatric genetics, radiology, eICU (remote ICU monitoring) and homecare, with plans for expansion into more specialties and new regions of the health system. Future expansion plans include trauma, pediatric and geriatric critical care, mental health counseling and geriatrics, as well as other medical specialties.
