About the Shared Decision Making Resource Center

The MaineHealth Shared Decision Making Task Force has defined shared decision making (SDM) as an integrative process between a patient and clinician that:

  • Engages the patient in decision-making to the extent desired
  • Provides the patient with current and unbiased information about alternative treatments
  • Facilitates the incorporation of patient preferences and values into healthcare decisions
                                                                     (SDM Task Force, March 2012)

To advance SDM at MaineHealth, the Shared Decision Making Resource Center (SDMRC) offers education and technical assistance to physicians and practice teams, helping them to:

  • Recognize clinical situations in which SDM is indicated
  • Establish processes for informing patients about multiple treatment options
  • Choose and use high quality patient decision aids
  • Provide decision support after patients use decision aids
  • Measure the impact of SDM

The videos on the right introduce Shared Decision Making from the perspectives of both providers and patients.
