Health Literacy Training
The critical importance of health literacy in determining patients’ ability to manage their health and make health care decisions is widely recognized.  The MaineHealth Learning Resource Center offers practical tools for MaineHealth providers and practice teams to help them meet patients’ health literacy needs, offering both training events and online resources.

This conference will explore ways in which health care providers can elicit and incorporate patient values and preferences into health care decisions.   Topics include:

  • Practical tools for providing decision support
  • SDM and elective surgery
  • Effective risk communication strategies for providers
  • Role of patient communities and technology in SDM
  • SDM and end of life care
  • Designing a value-based health insurance product featuring SDM
  • Role of health literacy in SDM
  • Measuring the impact of SDM

Keynote speakers include John Wennberg, MDMPH, creator of the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care and co-founder of the Foundation for Informed Medical Decision Making; and “e-Patient Dave” deBronkart, cancer survivor and founder of the Society for Participatory Medicine.
