New - the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (AMBS) has created a powerful new video that explains the benefits of our work, through the stories of others. We encourage you to take a look today!

Weight loss surgery can benefit appropriately selected patients in many ways.  In addition to weight loss, most patients experience improvement in medical conditions, a decrease in medications and an improvement in quality of life.

To qualify for weight loss surgery, you must meet certain criteria set by the National Institutes of Health as well as your individual health insurance company.

Appropriate Weight

The main criteria used for determining eligibility for weight loss surgery is called Body Mass Index or BMI.  You can calculate your BMI by using a  BMI table .

In order to qualify for weight loss surgery, you must have a BMI of 40 or higher (or approximately 100 pounds overweight).  If you have a BMI of 35 AND medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes or sleep apnea you may also be eligible for weight loss surgery.   Individuals with a BMI of less than 35 do not qualify for either type of weight loss surgery at Maine Medical Center.

Unsuccessful Weight loss Attempts

Weight loss surgery should be considered a last resort for patients looking to lose weight.  We require that you have tried to lose weight in the past and have been unsuccessful at keeping it off.
