Job Description
General Summary
Under supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse and according to established policies and procedures, performs various service duties and routine technical tasks such as taking vital signs and assisting patients with basic hygiene and daily living activities. Specific duties may vary by area of assignment.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
1. Performs various duties necessary to provide complete care within established standards, policies, and procedures. These may include giving complete and partial baths, positioning patients, enemas, making beds, ambulating, and feeding patients.
2. Assists with admission, transfer, and/or discharge of patients, by transporting, lifting and positioning patients while following necessary safety precautions.
3. Contributes to the development of the patient plan of care under direction of a Registered Nurse. Communicates information related to nursing care of patients to other health team members, including changes noted.
4. Documents patient care provided according to policy and procedure guidelines.
5. Reinforces selected patient teaching initiated by Registered Nurse. Provides emotional support to patients and families.
6. Performs and records routine technical tasks such as vital signs, collection of specimens, intake and output and mass.
7. Assists in maintaining patient and unit area in a clean and orderly manner.
8. Will be proactive in identifying, reporting and participating in the resolution of any potential or actual patient safety issues.
9. Considers the special needs and behaviors of specific patient age groups.
Minimum knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
1. Must be certified as a Nursing Assistant by the State of Maine and be on the State of Maine Registry, having completed a six-week or equivalent course.
2. Ability to read, write, and speak English in order to follow simple oral or written instructions and complete standard forms.
3. Ability to perform simple arithmetic calculations.
4. Interpersonal skills necessary to exchange information and maintain courteous relationships with patients, visitors, and Maine Medical Center employees.
5. Knowledge of standards, policies, procedures and organizational structure of the unit, Nursing Services, and the Institution.
6. Participates in continuing education relative to role as defined.
Working Conditions
1. Requires frequent heavy lifting, walking, bending and reaching.
2. Potential exposure to high level stimuli, ie, multiple simultaneous interactions, telephones, equipment noise.
3. Occasionally exposed to communicable diseases, unpleasant sights, and odor.
4. May include working some evening and/or nightshifts, weekends, and holidays.
5. May be required to participate in flexible staffing based on patient care needs.
Reporting Relationships
1. Reports to the Nursing Director.
