Radiology Residency

Overview

Department

Maine Medical Center is a 606 bed tertiary referral center and a state designated Trauma Center, with residencies in all major specialties. The radiology department performs over 170,000 exams per year, which includes about 25,000 CT scans, 17,000 US studies including vascular/interventional studies and 10,000 MRI exams.

Physician Staff:
26 Diagnostic Radiologists with subspecialty expertise including angio/interventional, neuroradiology (CT, MR, myelography), nuclear medicine, abdominal imaging (CT, US), mammography, GI, GU, chest, musculoskeletal and pediatric radiology, 7 Radiation Oncologists, 12 Diagnostic Radiology Residents (3 per year) at Maine Medical Center.

Equipment

The department has been newly renovated to accomodate the hospital's PACS implementation. Equipment includes, 4 helical CT scanners, including CT fluoro, 3 high field MRI scanners, 4 Ultrasound units on site and 3 off site, 3 SPECT scanners and 2 gamma cameras in nuclear medicine, Angiograpy suite with 2 new digital rooms including neurointerventional, Fluoroscopy suite with 3 digital fluoroscopy units, 5 on site general computed radiography rooms including tomography, 1 on site ACR accredited mammmography unit with 5 off site ACR accredited mammography units and 1 stereotactic mammographic biopsy unit.

Residency Training

1 clinical year followed by 4 years of diagnostic radiology training including 3 months at Children's Hospital in Boston and 6 weeks at Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, D.C. Teaching conferences at 0715 and 1200 daily throughout the academic year and 1200 conference only during the summer months. Work rounds with attending radiologist several times per day. ACR Teaching collection and CDROM learning both available in the department. Departmental library with easy access. Resident fund for books/conferences. Resident curriculum includes 44 weeks general radiology (GI, GU, Chest, Bone, ER), 12 weeks mammography, 25 weeks nuclear radiology, 4 weeks cardiac radiology, 14 weeks pediatric radiology, 12 weeks angio/interventional, 16 weeks body CT, 17 weeks neuro CT, 16 weeks MRI, 17 weeks ultrasonography, 8 weeks elective, 6 weeks AFIP, 16 weeks vacation (4 per year).

Also technologist training in radiology and radiation therapy through Southern Maine Technical College, as well as ultrasonographer training program.
