Cancer Care For Women
General Pre-Operative Instructions
For any surgery:
- Stop smoking as soon as possible. Our office team suggests you at least decrease your amount of smoking as soon as the operation is booked. The complications of anaesthesia (whether you are going to sleep or from not moving after even a spinal) can be decreased if you stop smoking or cut down until the date of your operation.
- One week before your surgery, decrease or stop aspirin, and aspirin-containing products (such as Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Naprosyn, Lodine, Feldene, and Clinaril). Tylenol, or tylenol-containing products (such as Darvocet, Vicodin, Tylenol with codeine, Hydrocodone, and Tylox) are fine to continue.
- Eating a balanced diet before surgery helps your body heal better after surgery. Our body needs plenty of vitamin C, and E to heal. We also need to have plenty of protein in our diet as these are the materials that our cells use as building blocks.
- If you are taking coumadin, talk with your doctor or nurse about taking it prior to surgery.
Bowel Prep Information: Before surgery, you will be given information about whether you will need to do a bowel prep. If you need to do a bowel prep: Purchase a total of 3 oz of the oral Fleets phospho-soda preparation at your local pharmacy. (This may be packaged in 1 1/2 oz bottles or 3 oz bottles - you need a total of 3 oz.)
Day of Surgery: No breakfast.
Results vary from person to person after starting the bowel preparation. Plan to be home during this time. Please call the office with any questions regarding these instrictions.
