The Emergency Department (ED) at Maine Medical Center (MMC) is a state-of-the-art facility designed to meet the needs of a high-volume, tertiary-care patient population. The ED is the busiest in Maine and serves approximately 60,000 patients per year from Maine and New Hampshire, as well as visitors from all over the world.
Our Emergency Department utilizes some of the most advanced technologic and therapeutic treatment modalities available in emergency medicine today, including bedside ultrasonography, light-speed CT scanning, digital radiography, and advanced airway management systems.
The MMC ED is the gateway to the most advanced trauma system in Maine. We offer a full spectrum of emergency and trauma care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to patients of all ages.
The Emergency Department is staffed 24 hours a day by board-certified emergency medicine physicians. The MMC ED is home to the only emergency medicine residency training program in northern New England. In addition, the full spectrum of sub-specialists, such as cardiologists, neurosurgeons, orthopedists and neonatologists, are available to assist in the care of our patients. Emergency nurses are highly-trained in all areas of emergency care and maintain specialty certifications in the administration of advanced adult and pediatric life support as well as adult and pediatric trauma care.
Rapid Lab Access
There is a dedicated radiology suite contiguous with the Emergency Department. Laboratory specimens are transported to the clinical laboratory via a pneumatic tube system, which allows for stat lab results to be returned in 10 to 20 minutes and routine laboratory evaluation turnaround time of less than one hour. Ninety-four percent of all patients presenting to the Emergency Department are evaluated by emergency physicians or by medical students, residents or physician assistants supervised by attending emergency physicians.
Special Pediatric Area
The Maine Medical Center Emergency Department offers specialized care in a unique environment designed for infants and children. 2009 ushered in a new era of Pediatric Emergency Services at the Bramhall campus with the opening of our state of the art 10-bed Pediatric Emergency Department.
Along with the 10-bed unit, a separate, child-friendly waiting room was constructed with games and toys for a more comfortable visit. The pediatric waiting room is separated from the main waiting area of the Emergency Department to shelter children from the general ED population.
This new unit provides specially designed space to care for children with the goal of making your child's visit prompt and efficient. Exam rooms in the new Pediatric ED are specially designed with the comforts of children and their parents in mind. We now offer a quiet, comforting environment for children to receive care while keeping all the resources of Maine Medical Center close at hand.
Emergency Care: 24/7
Our department serves patients from two locations. The Bramhall Campus Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and provides all types of emergency and trauma care. For life's minor emergencies, Brighton FirstCare is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily and cares for patients with urgent injuries and illnesses.
The ED at Maine Medical Center also supports the Northern New England Poison Center (NNEPC) and the Regional Emergency Medical Information System (REMIS). The Poison Center staffs a 24-hour hotline at 1-800-222-1222 for people who have been exposed to a poison. Callers are instructed in proper first aid techniques and are advised if they should proceed to their emergency department for further treatment.
