Geriatric Inpatient Programs

Hospital Elder Life Program (H.E.L.P.)

The H.E.L.P. Geriatric Team

Volunteers
Carry out core activities directly with patients at the bedside (see previous volunteer programs). Other volunteer opportunities include shorter shifts to do specific activities. Opportunities include serving tea and beverages, playing games or cards, playing an instrument or singing, providing posters or simple decorations for holidays and special occasions, and reading to patients or writing letters.

All volunteers must be available to commit at least six months. Volunteers undergo extensive classroom and one-on-one training. Elder Life Specialist
Holly Bean,CTRS, is a nationally certified therapeutic recreation specialist. She is responsible for patient screening, volunteer recruitment and coordination of volunteer activities.

Elder Life Nurse Specialist
Stacey Farrington, MS, RN-BC, is a Masters-prepared nurse with experience in geriatrics. She participates in Rounds with nursing staff and H.E.L.P. interdisciplinary team, and provides comprehensive geriatric assessments and interventions.
 Heidi Wierman, MD Geriatrician
Heidi Wierman, MD, participates in the H.E.L.P. interdisciplinary rounds and provides consultation on medical issues important to older adults.

Includes staff nurses, rehabilitation

Hospital Staff Collaborators
Includes staff nurses, rehabilitation therapists, dietitians, chaplains, pharmacists, discharge planners, and social workers who:

  • Assist with volunteer training
  • Participate in weekly H.E.L.P. rounds
  • Consult upon referral by H.E.L.P. staff.
