Our Staff
During your visits to our department, you will meet
several members of the Radiation Oncology team.
Radiation Oncologist
Your radiation oncologist is a physician who is specially
trained to use radiation for the treatment of disease.
He or she will review your medical history and symptoms,
perform a physical exam, and discuss treatment options
with you. Your radiation oncologist will work closely
with your medical oncologist, surgeon,and primary care
doctor.
Oncology Nurse Practitioner
The oncology nurse practitioner is an advanced nurse
who has specific training in the field of radiation
oncology. The nurse works closely with the radiation
oncologist. They see patients for initial consultations
and will assess patients throughout their treatment
course. They will review all findings with the radiation
oncologist. The nurse is under the direct supervision
of the physician.
Radiation Therapist
The radiation therapist is the professional you will
see most often during the course of your treatment.
The therapist has been specially trained to precisely
position you for your treatments, deliver the required
radiation doses accurately and recognize radiation side
effects.
Radiation Oncology Nurse
The radiation Oncology nurse has been trained to provide
nursing care for cancer patients receiving radiation
therapy and to recognize and deal with any side effects
of radiation treatments. The nurse assists the physician
in your care, and is available at any time to answer
your questions. Your radiation oncology nurse can also
assist you if you need help arranging transportation
for your treatments, information about support groups
or nutritional consultations. Our nurses also have various
educational videotapes, books and cassette tapes available
for you to borrow.
Radiation Dosimetrist
The radiation dosimetrist has had special training
in radiation treatment planning computers and in the
ways radiation interacts with normal and diseased tissue.
The dosimetrist works with the radiation oncologist
to develop a customized treatment plan for each patient.
Radiation Physicist
The radiation physicist has an advanced degree in physics,
and additional training in all the technical aspects
of your treatment. He or she monitors the performance
of the radiation therapy equipment and also oversees
the work of the radiation dosimetrist.
