History of Rehabilitation Medicine

Our services have been in existence since before 1925 with the hiring of a physiotherapist technician. Most of our care was centered on bedside exercises and modalities. In the 1930's we officially were named a Physical Therapy department.

• 1940 - Involved in a Polio Clinic
• 1950 - Involved in an Amputee Clinic
• 1951 - Sole Speech Therapist in Maine joined our department
• 1955 - Our therapists were conforming to the new licensure regulations
• 1990 - Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy combined with Speech and Language Therapy, team focused department
• 2000 - Stressed education, Physical Therapists went on to be doctorate level and have a collaborative research effort with University of New England

Today we have a staff of over 50 therapists, offer specialty programs, extensive clinic coverage, and bedside and gym based care. Our values continue to be shaped by dedicated directors and caregivers.
