Hannaford Donates $500,000 for Simulation Lab at Maine Medical Center
The Hannaford Charitable Foundation is helping bring a state-of-the art medical learning center to Maine's largest hospital.
Maine Medical Center (MMC) and the Hannaford Charitable Foundation today announced a $500,000 gift supporting construction of a hands-on, simulation learning center for a variety of medical techniques, ranging from surgery to patient examinations.
The $5.82 million facility - The Hannaford Center for Safety, Innovation and Simulation at Maine Medical Center - will be an 18,000-square-foot facility located at MMC's Brighton Campus on Portland's Brighton Avenue.
"This center brings an amazing innovation in learning to our community that will support positive healthcare outcomes for generations," says Beth Newlands Campbell, president of Hannaford and a member of the Hannaford Charitable Foundation's Board of Trustees. "Studies show that teaching hospitals have better patient outcomes and The Hannaford Center for Safety, Innovation and Simulation at Maine Medical Center will support continuous improvement in health care, better preparing our medical school graduates and helping current staff hone their skills."
Features of the simulation center include operating rooms that are identical to those at MMC; a skills lab, where students practice procedures such as stitching sutures or performing colonoscopies; and patient rooms where students can build their patient communication skills and develop a patient- and family-centered bedside manner. Only a handful of hospitals in the nation have similar facilities housed in one comprehensive location.
"Evolving medical education research data indicates that simulation centers may turn out to be one of the best, most efficient, and safest ways to learn medical techniques and gain medical knowledge," says Randy Darby, MD, Director of Medical Simulation at Maine Medical Center. "We'll be able to teach students in a controlled - but completely realistic - environment. In the same way the pilots learn to fly and sharpen their skills through simulation drills, our students and staff can practice deliberately and repeatedly, fully learn a concept, perfect a technique, and be much more skilled when they treat patients in the real world."
The Hannaford Center for Safety, Innovation and Simulation at Maine Medical Center will also house a dozen medical mannequins, at a cost of over $300,000 each, that mimic humans. "These mannequins are incredibly life-like," says Dr. Darby. "They breathe, bleed, and exhibit symptoms of minor or major injury, as well as mild to life threatening diseases - almost anything we see in live patients from kids to adults. They will provide invaluable experience to our future caregivers."
Maine Medical Center (MMC) is a complete health care resource for the people of Greater Portland and the entire state, as well as northern New England. Incorporated in 1864, MMC is the state's largest medical center, licensed for 637 beds and employing more than 6,000 people. MMC's unique role as both a community hospital and a referral center requires an unparalleled depth and breadth of services, including an active educational program and a world-class biomedical research center. As a nonprofit institution, Maine Medical Center provides nearly 23 percent of all the charity care delivered in Maine. MMC is a member of the MaineHealth system, a growing family of health care services in southern, central, and western Maine. For more information, visit www.mmc.org.
