Maine Medical Center Becomes Drop-Off Site for Breast Milk
Maine Medial Center is joining the Mother's Milk Bank of New England network and will become the first drop-off site in Maine for human breast milk.
A donor milk bank is a not-for-profit service established to collect, screen, process, and distribute donated human milk primarily to premature and sick babies whose mothers do not have enough milk.
“Human milk is the gold standard in terms of nutrition for babies, especially preterm or critically ill infants,” says Geri Tamborelli, RN, Nursing Director of the Family Birth Center and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Maine Medical Center.
Research shows sick infants who receive breast milk have fewer days of antibiotics, and experience markedly lower rates of diarrhea, urinary tract infections, and even death, according to Tamborelli.
In addition to collecting milk, Maine Medical Center’s Family Birth Center will also receive pasteurized milk from Mother's Milk Bank of New England to provide to NICU infants.
Mother's Milk Bank of New England is one of 12 accredited human milk banks in North America.
