|MMC Radiation Oncology
Radiation oncolgy, also known as radiation therapy, is defined as the use of high energy x-rays or particles to treat disease. The goal of radiation therapy is to kill the cancer cells while sparing the normal surrounding tissue. Radiation therapy may be used alone, or combined with other treatments such as chemotherapy and/or surgery.
The MMC Radiation Oncology Department consists of four separate treatment centers: Coastal Cancer Treatment Center in Bath, Maine, the Scarborough Radiation Therapy Center in Scarborough, Maine, the Southern Maine Radiation Therapy Center at Maine Medical Center in
Portland, Maine, and the Cancer Care Center of York County in Sanford. This is our newest site, in partnership
with Goodall Hospital and Southern
Maine Medical Center.
This multi-center approach allows patients to remain closer to home, while undergoing their course of radiation treatment.
