The Maine Medical Center Cancer Institute

Surgical Oncology

Surgical oncology focuses on the surgical management of cancer. With more subspecialty-trained oncology surgeons that any other hospital in Maine, the MMC Cancer Institute offers the greatest depth and breadth of surgical oncology expertise Cancer surgery at the Maine Medical Center Cancer Institutein the state. As a referral center for some of the most complex cancer cases in the area, this expertise allows us to offer much-needed hope to patients and their families - in a convenient and close-to-home setting.

Outcomes in surgical cancer care are positively associated with surgeon volume. In other words, the more cancer cases a surgeon treats, the more proficient he or she becomes, and patients experience improved survival rates as a result. The MMC Cancer Institute's oncology surgeons perform more of every type of cancer surgery than any other hospital in Maine - a volume level that translates into patient outcomes that consistently meet or exceed national benchmarks.

Led by a fellowship-trained surgical oncologist, the MMCCI surgical oncology team also performs some of the most advanced procedures in all of New England. In fact, MMC is the only hospital in the entire Northeast to perform intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemoperfusion (IHCP), a cutting-edge treatment option for certain abdominal tumors.

In addition, MMC is the only hospital in Maine to provide such surgical oncology resources as:

  • Comprehensive surgical treatment for both primary and metastatic liver cancer
  • Laparoscopic partial nephrectomy for kidney cancer
  • Comprehensive treatment of colorectal cancer by the only three board-certified colorectal surgeons in Maine and other skilled oncology surgeons

What also sets the MMC Cancer Institute apart is our multidisciplinary approach to patient care. We recognize that effective cancer care requires more specialist interaction than any other field of medicine. We not only have all the specialists for treating cancer right here, in one place, but we've also created an infrastructure that facilitates their ability to collaborate on each patient's care.

The MMCCI has numerous tumor boards - groups of specialists who meet regularly to discuss how to best manage the care of individuals who have a specific type of cancer. Our oncology surgeons attend the tumor board meetings that correspond to their specialty area, working with medical and radiation oncologists, pathologists, registered nurses, social workers and other clinicians on the optimal plan of care for each patient.

To further enhance the quality of patient care available at Maine Medical Center Cancer Institute, we are engaged in clinical research to advance surgical methods of diagnosing and treating cancer. Clinical trials relating to liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, and IHCP are currently underway - giving patients access to new treatments here that may not be available at other hospitals.
