Life Beyond Cancer

Your Bridge To Survivorship Starts Here.

Helping you live with, through, and beyond the
cancer experience

Who is a cancer survivor?
Simply put, cancer survivors are people who have been diagnosed with cancer and those people in their lives affected by the diagnosis including family, friends and caregivers.

There are more than 12 million cancer survivors in the United States today.  Estimates suggest that by the year 2020 there will be about 20 million.  This is due, in part, to early detection, state-of-the-art technology, improved treatment plans, and the love and supportive care of family and friends.

Recovery is not always the end of the cancer experience.  In fact, survivorship may have just as many challenges as active treatment.  Going back to life as you once knew it may not be possible.  Living with the uncertainty of cancer recurrence now becomes a part of your “new life.”   Life-long surveillance will be necessary to monitor for cancer recurrence and the management of late effects and health concerns that may arise as a direct result of your active treatment.

Maine Medical Center Cancer Institute recognizes that receiving a cancer diagnosis and undergoing treatment are life-altering experiences for you, and your loved ones. There are physical, emotional, and practical concerns associated with a cancer diagnosis and its treatment.  These issues and concerns can develop while receiving active treatment, immediately following treatment, or years later.  Choose from this list of common problems to learn more.
