Prior to these roles, Dr. Bates served as the Chief of Medicine at Maine Medical Center for nine years.

Dr. Bates received both his Bachelor of Science Degree and Medical Degree from the University of Washington where he completed his Internal Medicine Internship, Residency and began his Fellowship in Pulmonary Medicine.  He completed his Pulmonary Fellowship at Maine Medical Center and continues his weekly practice at Chest Medicine Associates.  His clinical interests include consultative Pulmonary Medicine, and in particular, lung cancer.  He is a member of several regional and national specialty and academic organizations, including the American Thoracic Society and the Association of Professors of Medicine.
