Dr. Peter Bates serves as Maine Medical Center's Vice President, Medical and Academic Affairs, Chief Medical Officer and Academic Dean for the Maine Medical Center - Tufts University School of Medicine Medical School Program. Maine Medical Center is the state's leading academic and research-based tertiary care and quaternary care center; Northern New England's premiere hospital; and verified Level 1 trauma center.
In his role as Vice President of Medical and Academic Affairs/Chief Medical Officer and in concert with the Chief Nursing Officer, Dr. Bates is responsible for all health and medical care delivered under the aegis of Maine Medical Center. He has oversight for all clinical, medical management, academic, research, education, and programmatic aspects of health care delivery. Dr. Bates serves as the primary liaison between Maine Medical Center management and the private practice community. He is also a key member of the senior management team - serving on the President's Council - and participates in all strategic and operational decisions and policy as a senior corporate officer of Maine Medical Center. Dr. Bates also serves as the Board Chair of Maine Medical Partners, with approximately 130 employed physicians of Maine Medical Center.
Dr. Bates is the Academic Dean overseeing a medical school partnership with the Tufts University School of Medicine. This initiative offers a "Maine Track" for applicants who are interested in a unique, innovative curriculum that will offer clinical training experiences in Maine and expose medical students to the advantages of rural practice as well as training in a major tertiary medical center. The program seeks to address the physician workforce shortage in Maine as well as provide access to a medical education for qualified Maine applicants.
Prior to these roles, Dr. Bates served as the Chief of Medicine at Maine Medical Center for nine years.
Dr. Bates received both his Bachelor of Science Degree and Medical Degree from the University of Washington where he completed his Internal Medicine Internship, Residency and began his Fellowship in Pulmonary Medicine. He completed his Pulmonary Fellowship at Maine Medical Center and continues his weekly practice at Chest Medicine Associates. His clinical interests include consultative Pulmonary Medicine, and in particular, lung cancer. He is a member of several regional and national specialty and academic organizations, including the American Thoracic Society and the Association of Professors of Medicine.
