Located on the banks of the Androscoggin River, Lewiston and neighboring Auburn form the business and cultural center of Androscoggin County as well as the second largest metropolitan area in Maine. With numerous world-class telecommunications and manufacturing companies, Lewiston is enjoying an economic renaissance. Lewiston is the home of world-renowned Bates College and provides a choice of four other colleges in the vicinity.
With its own Public Theatre, several nearby golf courses, and the largest bird sanctuary in New England, Lewiston has much to offer for rest and relaxation. Lewiston also hosts its own hockey team, the Lewiston Maine-iacs, and every year hosts the Great Falls Balloon Festival, a 3-day event where hot air balloons from around the country take to the skies. Even a stroll through the downtown streets using the county's Walking Tour directions as a guide is an educational and fun experience for everyone.
Lewiston's vitality and cultural richness are reasons the area was selected as the national headquarters of the Forum Francophone des Affaires, an international trade group of French-speaking nations. An early favorite for Canadian and European immigrants, French is still commonly spoken in the area. There has most recently been an insurgence of Somali immigrants to the area as well. The population of Lewiston is approximately 40,000.
