We want to transplant our patients quickly, which means making sure they are healthy enough for a transplant and putting them on the wait list for a kidney as soon as possible. In the past, managing the many tests needed and collecting the results was hard for our patients’ primary care doctors and transplant program staff.
The Fast Track Evaluation is an optional program we offer that is designed to eliminate many of the delays our patients may face when they are being evaluated for a transplant. If you decide to enter the Fast Track Evaluation Program, and your evaluation is straightforward, it will look like this:
How it Works
First, you will be referred to us and come to Portland for transplant evaluation. If you want to participate in the Fast Track Evaluation Program, we will schedule most of your pre-transplant testing to be done in one day at Maine Medical Center. You will then have a second visit with your transplant coordinator, who will talk to you about the results of your tests, and tell you if you need to have any more tests. If you don’t need any more testing, your coordinator will present your case to the transplant team, who will decide if you are a suitable transplant recipient. If you are a suitable candidate, you will be placed on the waiting list for a transplant and begin accruing waiting time or go ahead with transplant if you have an approved living donor.
