Maine Transplant Program

John P. Vella, M.D.
Director, Maine Transplant Program

Message from the Director

Welcome to the Maine Transplant Program online. Our mission is to provide the best care for patients with irreversible kidney failure and their living donors. As the only transplant program in the state, Maine Medical Center has performed more than 1500 kidney transplants since 1971. We are committed to providing top quality, multidisciplinary, personalized treatment. Our team, made up of nephrologists, surgeons, and nurses, as well as laboratory, pharmacy, nutrition, social work, financial and administrative staff, have many years of experience in the transplant field. We work closely with the providers who know you best, your referring nephrologist and dialysis unit, to ensure that you have the best outcome.

So why come to us? When compared with other programs in the United States, our transplant rate (proportion of referred patients who actually receive transplants) is double and our waiting time is half. Our patient and graft survival rates are excellent. Plus, you don’t need to drive to Boston! We offer “fast track” programs that can speed up the evaluation of transplant candidates and their living donors so we can make a decision within 6 weeks of the initial visit. The Maine Transplant Program has enthusiastically embraced Kidney Paired Donation, one of the most exciting developments in recent years permitting matching of incompatible donor and recipient pairs.

Maine Medical Center has a three-part mission: caring for our community, educating tomorrow's caregivers, and researching new ways to provide care. The transplant program has been at the forefront of both translational and clinical research. Our faculty continues to publish scholarly works in a wide variety of peer-reviewed journals. We are very active participants in medical education at every level. You may meet our trainees both in clinic and in the hospital as they learn about kidney disease and transplantation from our expert faculty.

Finally, although we believe that there is no substitute for meeting with you face-to-face, we offer this website to provide background information to help you make important decisions about your healthcare. We are delighted that you are considering our program and look forward to meeting you in person.
