OB/GYN Residency Faculty

Meet the Faculty


Dr. Hector M. Tarrazza Dr. Hector M. Tarraza is chairman of the Department of OB/GYN at Maine Medical Center. His clinical area of expertise is gynecologic oncology . He is a graduate of Harvard College with a BA in Chemistry. He attended the Harvard Medical School and completed postgraduate training residency in OBGYN at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. His subspecialty training in Gynecologic Oncology was at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Tarraza is board-certified in both obstetrics and gynecology and gynecologic oncology.

He has an active interest in Global Health. He works with numerous non profit organizations providing primary and surgical care to Africa, Latin America and Asia. MMC OBGYN residents participate in many of the overseas mission trips with him as part of their training.

Dr. Tarraza has two grown children. He's an avid New England Sports fan (Patriots and Red Sox) and his hobbies include traveling, boating and skiing.

Associate Department Chairman

Dr. PulvinoDr. John Pulvino was born in Buffalo, NY and grew up in rural upstate New York. He completed his undergraduate studies at Harvard College. Dr. Pulvino received his MD from SUNY-Buffalo and completed residency at Maine Medical Center.

Dr. Pulvino was in private practice in Portland Maine for five years before returning as a full-time faculty member in 2006. He has received a number of teaching awards including the National APGO/CREOG Teaching Award on three occasions. Dr. Pulvino is currently an examiner for the OBGYN national oral boards.

Dr. Pulvino lives in Scarborough, Maine where he enjoys spending time with his wife Jennifer and two sons Ben and Will. He is an avid sports fan and reader.



Program Director

Dr. Kalli VaraklisDr. Kalli Varaklis is the Residency Program Director and has a long-standing interest and involvement  in graduate medical education, both at Maine Medical Center and previously at Boston University.  After residency at Maine Medical Center, she focused her professional energies on resident education and pursuing a Hartford fellowship in Geriatrics at Boston University.  She completed the Harvard Macy Course, in medical education, just before returning to Maine in 2004.  She is one of the Resident Continuity Clinic Attendings and supervises resident continuity surgery.  She has almost completed a Master's in Medical Education.  She received a personal commendation from the recent RRC review for her work as Residency Program Director, which she considers a highlight of her career.

Kalli reads voraciously, loves the NYT crossword puzzle,has a large organic garden and enjoys any outdoor activity, except swimming in the Maine ocean!  She is married to Sean who is an environmental engineer and drummer.  She has three children, Grady, Declan and Madeleine, and dreads Little League season.


 Associate Program Director

Jason Lachance, MDDr. Jason Lachance is the Associate Residency Program Director and a gynecologic oncologist at Maine Medical Center/Maine Medical Partners Women's Health. A native of New Hampshire, he completed his undergraduate degree at the College of Holy Cross in Worcester, MA before matriculating at Georgetown University School of Medicine. He completed his OB/GYN residency at the University of Washington in Seattle before moving on to fellowship training in gynecologic oncology at the University of Virginia where he also completed a Master's Degree in clinical invesitigative sciences. His professional interests include undergraduate and graduate medical education, decision analysis modeling, cost effectiveness research, and quality outcomes research.

In his free time, Dr Lachance enjoys running and vegetable gardening, as well as spending time having fun and exploring Maine with his wife, Amanda, and their two children, Will and Charlotte.
