Message from the Chairman
Welcome to the Department of OB/GYN at Maine Medical Center.
We, in the OB/GYN Department at Maine Medical Center, have a mission to provide the highest level of care to our patients, recruit, train and support residents in becoming caring, competent and excellent physicians and to produce high quality clinical research. Our faculty and ancillary staff are consistently successful in achieving these goals.
Our goal is to educate physicians in complex medical and surgical procedures in our tertiary care facility. Our department consistently receives teaching awards both on the resident and faculty level. Maine Medical Center has recently partnered with Tufts Medical School in a new joint venture to create the MMC/Tufts Medical School. We have just welcomed our third group of medical students to this new school. We are committed to teaching.
Our faculty consists of 33 volunteer and full time generalist faculty, 3 Maternal Fetal Medicine Physicians, 4 Gynecologic Oncologists, 1 Reproductive Endocrinologist and two Urogynecolgists. Maine Medical Center Scaroborough Ambulatory Surgical Center is an outpatient surgical facility to compliment the main campus Operating Rooms. We have a strong teaching affiliation with Boston IVF in Portland. Our residents acquire most of their skills within a short radius of the main campus.
Maine Medical Center is currently expanding our MMCRI Research facility. The research arm of our mission has been extremely successful. Each resident is required to become involved in research projects with our faculty members. Our full time faculty are involved in numerous research projects, peer review articles, acted a principle investigators in numerous trials, authored a great number of review articles, and textbook chapters.
We encourage our residents to participate in international missions. For the past 10 years I have been actively involved in missions to several countries. Residents have the opportunity to travel to these countries, experience different cultures and gain an appreciation for all we have to offer. Caring for the poorest of the poor is a humbling experience and one that is taught only in experiencing it. These residents return to our environment with a new appreciation for all that we have taken for granted: premier healthcare in an environment that is consistently rich in experience and the luxuries of technology, medications as well as the simple things in life that we have access to on a daily basis.
Maine is known as: "the way life should be". We invite you to visit our beautiful state, our state of the art facility and the department that makes us all proud to call our own.
