Message from the Program Director
Welcome to the Ob/Gyn residency program at Maine Medical Center! We are a unique residency program: a hybrid that combines the high academic standards of a university-affiliated program with the clinically busy, warm feeling of a community-affiliated residency. We are a very busy program! Our residents consistently operate at higher percentiles nationally, and our thoughtful decision not to have fellows, allows our residents to have primary teaching experience from our 4 busy oncologists, 2 urogynecologists, as well as from over 30 generalists. Our obstetrics experience is very clinically diverse, reflecting that we are the tertiary referral center for all of Maine and Eastern New Hampshire. We have a very strong continuity clinic experience for the residents who provide prenatal care to a culturally diverse population and are able to operate on their own surgical patients more than 90% of the time - truly continuity.
All of our busy clinical activity is balanced by protected didactic time during the week, as well as a night float system that alleviates the burdens of weekday on-call. We have a formal research requirement and have protected time and structure to allow residents to thoughtfully invest time in a well-structured research project. We encourage and support our residents to teach, not only the many medical students that highly rate our residents, but also to teach each other. Our residents have active participation in the residency administration, as well as on the Graduate Medical Education Committee. There is a collegiality amongst residents that results in a program where residents are supportive of each other and work together to solve problems. This is encouraged by the residency program: residents attend team-building sessions throughout the year and have a Resident Retreat at the end of the year with new interns to begin the bonding experience.
We believe that we can provide a very high level of training and a very robust clinical experience while understanding and valuing that residents can achieve this while balancing a healthy, adult life outside the hospital. The beautiful setting of our program in Maine, underscores this need for balance and we strive to live up to the motto of Maine: "The way life should be"
