Clinical research is an important component of the mission of the Neuroscience Institute. Staff members are actively involved in a number of basic science, clinical, and translational research studies which will help to improve how neurosciences patients are cared for. For example, an active pediatric neuro oncology clinical trials program is available through the Maine Children's Cancer Program. Several physicians are involved in research studies focusing on new surgical techniques or technologies in the field of neurosurgery, such as minimally-invasive spine surgery.
Over the past year, the Neuroscience Institute has provided funding for physician-initiated research projects in neuro critical care, cardiovascular care, emergency medicine, and neurosurgery. The Institute also maintains a close working relationship with Maine Medical Center's Research Institute, which supports research in the biomedical field through a staff of world-class scientists.
