Donations & Volunteering
We appreciate your interest in supporting the children at The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital. Because of the thousands of children we serve each year, there is always a need for toys, craft supplies, DVDs, and video games. For infection control reasons, all donations must be new and non-toxic. Please do not wrap gifts. Safety regulations require all gifts to be checked for appropriateness. Wrapping paper and ribbons are most welcome donations so that gifts can be wrapped after they are sorted. For a list of ideas, please see our BBCH Wish List 2015.
If you are interested in making a donation or need more specific ideas of items needed more immediately, please contact the Child Life Program at (207) 662-6267. Donations can be dropped off at the Information Desk at the front entrance of Maine Medical Center, preferably Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM-5:00 PM.
Our goal is for every child who enters the hospital to receive a cuddly toy so that they have something to hold and comfort them during their stay. We welcome donations of new stuffed animals, as many patients have allergies or low immune systems. We ask that stuffed animals be no larger than 10 inches tall so that they are easy for the children to hold and transport with them throughout the hospital.
Owwie Box Toys
Undergoing medical procedures can be frightening and difficult for children. Our owwie boxes are filled with small toys so that when a child is done having their procedure, they can pick out a toy for their reward of doing a great job. We are looking for donations to fill our owwie boxes, which contain items like you would find at dollar stores.
Quilts, Blankets, and Pillowcases
Similar to the stuffed animals, we hope that every child who enters the hospital can receive a colorful quilt or blanket on their bed, as well as a special pillowcase. We have wonderful volunteers who donate homemade quilts, blankets, and pillowcases year-round for this very purpose. In order to ensure the safety of our patients, all donations must be laundered before being given to a patient, so we ask that all donated quilts, blankets and pillowcases be machine washable.
Volunteers are vital to the Child Life Program and are based in the Child Life Center (also known as the playroom). Maybe you are retired and have extra time on your hands or a student wanting to learn more about the hospital environment. Maybe you work full-time but love to be around children and can give some time in the evenings or on a weekend. Our volunteers help provide play opportunities for the children and maintain a safe environment where a kid can be a kid.
With over 50 volunteers that help run our Child Life Center, we are able to open our doors seven days a week. Volunteers play games, puzzles, and participate in arts and crafts, to name a few things. They also provide play opportunities at the bedside for children who are unable to get down to the playroom.
