The MMC Weight & Wellness Program offers two types of weight loss operations, both of which are performed through small incisions with the assistance of a video camera. This type of surgery typically results in a faster, more comfortable recovery.
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
This procedure involves separating the stomach into two chambers, one very small and one large. A portion of the small intestine is then connected to the small stomach chamber. The operation works by giving patients a feeling of fullness after eating very little food. On average, patients lose 50-70% of their excess body weight.
Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy
Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy surgery works in one way: it is restrictive. Commonly referred to as the “sleeve” procedure, this surgery is restrictive because a percentage of the stomach is permanently removed. Most people feel satisfied after eating a very small amount of food. The result is weight loss due to eating less.
This procedure will take approximately 1-2 hours in the operating room. Patients can plan on staying in the hospital for about 2 days after surgery. Most patients return to work or usual daily activities in 2-3 weeks.
