Key Strengths of the Program

The people! Ask anyone in the program, and that will be their first reply

Superior outpatient training:

  • Family Medicine Centers are NCQA Level 3 Patient Centered Medical Homes
  • Care for a panel of patients who identify you as their doctor
  • Group medical visits for various chronic diseases
  • Innovative Hospital 2 Home transition visits for patients just discharged from the hospital

Excellent inpatient training:

  • Family Medicine inpatient service cares for adults, newborns, children, and obstetric patients, all supervised by family physicians
  • Great case mix, as MMC provides care for both common community disorders as well as disorders that require a tertiary care medical center
  • Deliver obstetric patients under the supervision of our family medicine doctors
  • Daily interdisciplinary care rounds including physicians, nurses, social workers, nutritionists, physical and occupational therapists
  • All inpatient training is at Maine Medical Center, a nationally ranked hospital and the top hospital in Maine

Great teaching – We consistently get feedback on the amount and exceptional quality of the teaching residents receive

Innovation – Resident feedback is crucial to our goal of continually improving the training we provide

Strong institutional and community support for Family Medicine – Family Medicine is one of the strongest and most well respected departments at MMC

Epic electronic medical record – both inpatient and outpatient

Limited 24-hour call - 2nd and 3rd year residents work 24-hour call shifts only 2-3 times per year

Living in Portland – Portland, Maine is Forbes’ Magazine’s ‘Most Livable City’ and Bon Appetit Magazine’s ‘America’s Foodiest Small Town.’ Our beaches, amazing local food, craft beers, and arts scene are other reasons we love it here.
