Pulmonary Embolism

Pulmonary embolism is a disease characterized by venous blood clots in the lungs. Patients generally have shortness of breath, chest discomfort, palpitations, and possibly lightheadedness or fainting.

Clinical Services

The Pulmonary and Critical Care Division at Maine Medical Center is devoted to providing thorough evaluation, treatment, and follow-up for all patients with pulmonary embolism. Patients may be seen and evaluated on an inpatient basis at the Bramhall campus of Maine Medical Center or as an outpatient at Chest Medicine Associates offices.

A complete evaluation of patients with pulmonary embolism is required to provide the optimal treatment to each individual. Services offered include:

  • Experienced and coordinated Pulmonary, Cardiology, Interventional Radiology and Hematology consultation as necessary
  • Echocardiography (transthoracic and transesophageal)
  • Pulmonary Angiography (Computed Tomography and Standard)
  • Ventilation-perfusion lung scanning
  • Heart Catheterization for direct hemodynamic  assessments
  • Catheter-directed Thrombolysis
  • Systemic Thrombolysis
  • Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH) evaluation and management

Therapeutic services stress coordination of care with the referring primary physician to provide high quality care for pulmonary embolism patients. Patient education and support is provided by physicians, and advanced practice provider specialists. Therapies such as thrombolytic and anticoagulation therapies, CTEPH medication management, home oxygen therapy, and coordination of care for pulmonary thromboendarterectomy are provided for patients as needed. Other investigational treatment options may also be available to suitable patients.
