Stephens Memorial Hospital and Western Maine Health are committed to providing our patients with the most current, high-quality cancer care available. We offer a full range of diagnostic, treatment and support services locally and by referral. We also offer screening services and resources for education about cancer and cancer prevention. Cancer Screening and Prevention Services
Early detection is imperative to reducing the prevalence of and suffering from cancer. SMH, in partnership with our local health care providers, offers free cancer screenings and services to qualifying patients.

Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program
Stephens Memorial Hospital has joined the Maine Breast and Cervical Program to offer free mammograms and pap smears to women who meet MCBCHP guidelines.

SMH Mammography Coupon Program
For uninsured or underinsured women, coupons for free screening mammograms and interpretations are available at the following physician offices:

  • Western Maine Family Practice
  • Western Maine Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Oxford Hills Family Practice
  • Oxford Hills Internal Medicine
  • Bethel Family Health Center
Diagnostic Services
Using the latest technology, Stephens Memorial Hospital provides many diagnostic services. We wish to treat patients as close to their homes as possible, therefore the following services have been made available at SMH:
  • ACR accredited mammography [Mammography Center]
  • ACR accredited stereotactic breast biopsy [Mammography Center]
  • Computed tomography scanning [Imaging]
  • Magnetic resonance imaging [Imaging]
  • Nuclear medicine scans [Imaging]
  • Full range of biopsy services, including sentinel node biopsies
In some cases, patients are referred to services in Portland, Lewiston, Boston or wherever necessary care can be provided.

Cancer Treatment
Stephens Memorial Hospital and our professional staff provide a broad range of treatment services locally, including cancer surgery and chemotherapy. All modalities of radiation therapy, bone marrow transplantation, access to clinical trials and other treatment types are available by referral.
